Menangle Harness Racing

Aside from harness racing, other races are also held in the Menangle Race Track such as steeplechases and thoroughbred races. From the months August to September, meetings will be held on Friday nights.

The venue is considered important and more than just a race course. It is actually looked at as an independent institution founded by pioneers who used to farm and racehorses for entertainment. In building the racecourse, one million tons of soil was used to raise the track 8 meters at the back, increasing its visibility. John Macarthur, the father of Australian sheep/wool industry bought the land of Menangle in year 1820. From then on, because of its style, it has been considered as the heir of horse racing in Australia.

The racetrack is 1,400 meters in circumference and has undergone a lot of improvements and developments since it was first built. It was then owned by a syndicate led by Sir Joynton Smith. Before, the gallop meetings held in Tabcorp Park Menangle is limited to just 12 to 14 each year and racing was continuously held on a regular basis, every Tuesdays and Thursdays of the week.
